Matthew Sanders, CEO of Knutsford-based, Brookfield Rose, raised £100K for The Outward Bound Trust by completing a world first; abseiling down three of London’s most iconic buildings in the ‘City Three Peaks Challenge’.
Matthew completed his 1,916 foot abseil attempt down three of the capital’s most distinctive buildings; The Gherkin, The Cheesegrater and The Walkie-Talkie, the longest civilian abseil in history and the first time anyone has abseiled down these buildings before.
Matthew said: “It’s been an amazing experience and a real honour to be given the opportunity to help this extremely worthwhile cause. I was absolutely determined to raise the £100K for The Outward Bound Trust and, thanks to the fantastic generosity from all my sponsors, I’ve managed to achieve this ambitious goal and helped to make a genuine difference. I’d sincerely like to thank everyone who has helped me in any way they could.
“I’ve always prided myself as someone with a good head for heights but when I was I was at the top of The Gherkin, just about to step backwards into thin air, I must admit, I didn’t feel so confident! However, spurred on by the huge challenge and the life-changing fundraising effort, I’m glad to say that the whole exhilarating experience passed without incident.”
Collectively, all the 40 intrepid adventurers that took part in the abseil challenge helped to raise over £4 million for The Outward Bound Trust and The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity.
Kristina Fitzpatrick, project lead at The Outward Bound Trust, added: “This huge sum of money will unlock life-changing experiences for thousands of young people from all walks of life across the country through the work of The Outward Bound Trust.
“We work in partnership with secondary schools and colleges to deliver outdoor residential experiences, focusing on how skills and experiences can be transferred back into the home, school or work environment - raising aspirations and developing effective leaders.
“Equally, through the work of The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, the money raised will fund projects and support services that give a helping hand to our nation's veterans and Service families.”
As part of the £100K target, The Brookfield Rose Trust donated £25K to kick off the fundraising effort and help support the cause. Every single penny is going to the charities and all the costs for the event have been donated free of charge.
