Find A Better Way, the Knutsford-based charity established by England football legend, Sir Bobby Charlton CBE, has received a grant from the FA of £1,966 as part of its ‘66 for 66’ grant awards. The FA is making 66 awards of £1,966 to causes and charities throughout the country with which the players of 1966 squad are associated or support.  The grants commemorate the year when England ruled the footballing world and represent a token of thanks from the FA to the players.

Sir Bobby was presented with the grant by FA chairman Greg Dyke at the launch of the National Football Museum’s 1966 exhibition in Manchester.

Said Sir Bobby, “I’m honoured to receive the ’66 for 66’ from the FA.  The donation will be put to excellent use to the ongoing programmes we are running, designed to assist and improve humanitarian de-mining teams to rid the world of the threat of landmines.”

Greg Dyke commented: “We’re delighted to support Sir Bobby’s charity in this way. From my discussions with various players from the 1966 squad in recent times, it is clear the FA has not done enough to mark their achievement – or simply keep in regular touch over the years. We are really keen to make amends for this, and these awards are one small way of saying thank you.”

The ’66 for 66’ initiative, whose funds have been generated from income from last season’s Community Shield, ensures there is an FA legacy from the series of activities and events taking place this summer. These kicked off in April with ‘Football Shirt Friday’ to raise funds for the Bobby Moore Fund into bowel cancer research and will culminate on the actual anniversary of England’s World Cup win on Saturday 30 July.

Find A Better Way was founded by Sir Bobby in 2011 after he visited minefields in former war zones in Cambodia and Bosnia. The charity acts as a major funding body for technological research into improving the tools available for the safe removal of landmines and explosives.
