Rachel Burden
Manchester based charity Retrak has this week announced BBC Radio 5 Live’s breakfast presenter, Rachel Burden as its ambassador.
The charity, headed up by ex-constable of Greater Manchester Police, Sir Peter Fahy, works in Uganda and East Africa with children who have been separated by their families and communities and are living on the streets. Retrak teams run programmes that provide a beginning-to-end approach for street children and the wider-community that improves their lives, with the end goal for the children to end up back in a secure and safe environment.
A delighted, Peter Fahy on Rachel’s involvement said: “She brings such energy, compassion and intelligence to the cause and will help to raise awareness of our work and the injustice for which we campaign against it. Many of our projects support young girls who have been deserted by their families and run the risk of modern slavery and trafficking. We are thrilled to have such an inspirational female figure on board.”
On her involvement with Retrak, Rachel said: “I was so impressed by Retrak’s work and saddened by the situation that so many children and in particular young women are finding themselves in. Sir Peter’s commitment to the cause and determination to influence change is infectious and I am looking forward to working with him and the rest of the team to help raise awareness of this amazing charity and the work it does in transforming lives.”
Rachel kicks off her involvement with the charity immediately and will be working with Sir Peter and the team on raising funds to enter a female team into the Street Child World Cup that is being held in Moscow in 2018.
Retrak’s mission is to improve the lives of street children and young people by working with their families and communities to identify the root cause of their problems in order to build long-term sustainable solutions. With partners on the ground in Uganda, Ethiopia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Brazil, Retrak works with all children no matter what creed, colour, faith base or gender.
