Carringtons Catering is urging females from across the North West to consider a career in the hospitality industry

Carringtons Catering champions females in the hospitality industry

According to The Guardian, recent news has revealed that although there are a total of 250,000 professional chefs in the country, only 18.5% of which are women – a decrease on the previous year’s percentage of 20.5%.

Director of Carringtons Catering Helen Wynn said: “For many, the hospitality industry has a stigma of being a very male-orientated career choice, with perceptions of working life in the kitchen painting an intimidating picture.

“While stereotypical gender roles in kitchen culture have altered over the decades, less than a fifth of professional chefs in the UK are female, but here at Carringtons Catering we are looking to change that alarming figure. In addition to the industry being unfairly portrayed as male-dominated, many women also think that due to the often unpredictable working schedule of the industry, it can be hard to maintain a work-life balance; with the right employer this isn’t true.”

With more than 35 years’ experience in the catering industry, Carringtons Catering is one of the North West’s longest standing independent firms, providing bespoke catering, event and hospitality services for a range of corporate and private occasions.

Earlier this year, Carringtons Catering gave Her Majesty The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh the royal treatment during the official reception lunch held at Liverpool Town Hall, during The Queen’s formal visit to the city.

Helen added: “At Carringtons Catering, 75% of our 60 staff members across all levels are female, with our management team made up of an equal number of both genders. In addition to myself being a female director, we have General Manager Mally Best, Accounts Manager Ann Kuipers, Events Manager Sophie Leadbetter and Sous Chef Becky Stokes, together with our ever-expanding front of house team. This is not to say that we think that females are better at their jobs than men – we want to give both genders platform both to begin and to progress their careers in the hospitality industry.”
