Chester Personal Trainer runs retreat for people affected by Breast Cancer

Chester Personal Trainer runs retreat for people affected by Breast Cancer

""

Six people have taken part in the first of a series of retreats for people affected by breast cancer.

The Nourish & Flourish retreat was run by personal trainer Sam Ford, from Mollington, near Chester.

Sam, 38, who is also a sports massage therapist and Nordic Walking instructor, developed the idea for the retreats after a friend died from cancer.

The week-long event was held in the French Alps and offered exercise, relaxation and balanced nutrition.

Ex- banker Sam said:

“'The retreat has been really successful.  I've felt that we have been able to provide just the right environment and atmosphere for people to be able to truly relax.

“People have been nourished and cared for - increasing their energy levels and instilling confidence.

“We have also been able to spend time with individuals, giving them personal support and recommendations on how to carry on with the things they have learnt.”

Several of Sam’s friends have been affected by various forms of cancer and she felt there was little in the way of holistic support.

The Nourish & Flourish retreats, which include yoga classes, are designed for people when their cancer treatments have finished. But exceptions can be made where on-going treatments are not compromised by attending the retreat.

A woman who was diagnosed and treated for breast cancer in 2010 said she found the retreats beneficial.

Emma, 48, said:

"It was relaxing and re-energising. I loved the yoga and the walking and it was great to learn new recipes which are easy to make and good for you.

"I would definitely recommend this to people recovering from breast cancer."

Sam, who previously worked for Credit Suisse in London for eight years, developed the idea for the retreats after leaving banking to become a personal trainer in 2006.

She said: “I left banking to become a personal trainer for job satisfaction and to give back.  The initial retreat idea was originally for 'healthy' people to come and put their lives back on track.

“But the cancer retreats developed after my friend died of Leukemia in 2008 and then two of my other close friends were diagnosed within a month of each other in 2009.

“After my friend died and I helped her husband, I realised how little holistic support was out there.  It became more apparent with my other friends, who are still in remission.”

Sam, who is self employed as a Personal Trainer when she is not running the retreats, wants to help people and at a price which may not cover her costs.

Nourish & Flourish Retreats are held in France, Sweden and the UK for people who have been diagnosed with breast cancer after their surgical and chemotherapy/radiotherapy treatments have finished.

The retreats cater for a maximum of six people, including the partners, friends or family of those affected by cancer.  For more details, visit www.nourishandflourishretreats.co.uk or call 07977518558.
