Pupils Get the Inside Track on Carpino Place

Pupils at St Philips CE Primary School in Salford had a behind the scenes view of the construction process of Carpino Place last week when contractor John Turner Construction Group delivered an assembly all about the development.

Project manager Matt Eastham spoke to the pupils about the 22 new homes being built just behind their school – the latest construction project in the Salford Central regeneration scheme.

His talk formed part of the scheme’s commitment to community education and integration. The Salford Central scheme is being delivered by English Cities Fund (ECf) – a joint venture between Muse Developments, Legal & General and the Homes & Communities Agency. Much of the scheme focuses on regenerating the land surrounding St Philips school – the Vimto Gardens development is close by, while Timekeepers Square is just on the other side of Chapel Street.

Hollie Reynolds, senior residential sales and marketing manager for the North at Muse, said: “Community work and engagement is at the heart of the Salford Central regeneration scheme – we’re committed to supporting the neighbourhood and making sure the new developments are considered part of the local framework. That’s why things like school assemblies and talks are so important; we want the next generation to feel part of the area where they live.”

This latest school talk gave pupils an insight into the construction process, detailing everything from how much concrete was used for the foundations (2,500 tonnes) to how many bricks are needed (167,000). It also reiterated the importance of safety on a construction site – and never entering or playing on one.

Matt Eastham, project manager at John Turner Construction Group, said: “It’s really great to be able to get in front of the pupils of St Philips, who can see the houses going up from their classroom windows. They were all very inquisitive about the houses and had lots of questions about everything from the types of digger we use to what they will look like when they’re finished. It’s very important to us that the local community is involved with the project and talks such as this are a vital part of making sure that happens.”

Situated off Oldfield Road, in Salford, Carpino Place boasts 22 luxury three and four bedroom townhouses – all with Help to Buy.

The homes are equipped with stunning high quality fixtures and fittings, as well as having the convenience of a designated parking space within an internal courtyard at the development. Other features include private rear gardens, rooftop terraces and patio areas. The project will also incorporate the restoration of the historic cobbled Wroe Street and South William Street..

The scheme, which is being delivered by ECf in conjunction with Salford City Council, has been designed to complement the surrounding area, enhancing the existing streetscape and strengthening the urban setting of Oldfield Road.

Councillor Lisa Stone, lead member for children and young people’s services at Salford City Council, praised the contractors for getting involved with local school children and spending time with the pupils.

She said: “It’s really important that local people feel involved and included in the changes to their communities. Children especially are naturally curious – I know that my young son is always excited to see a building site! Having the contractor go into the school is a great learning opportunity and might even encourage some of the students to think about careers in construction when they grow up. Plus it gets over a crucial safety message about the dangers of building sites.”

Carpino Place is named after Archbishop Francesco Carpino who, in 1966 along with the then mayor of Salford, laid the foundation stone of The Stella Maris Seaman’s Mission, which previously occupied the site.
