Manchester makes its mark on the UK's digital map as co-working drives growth

A NATIONAL report into the rapid growth of Britain’s digital tech industry has highlighted Manchester as a hotspot for growth.

The report highlights that 50 of the fastest growing digital tech companies in the North are in Manchester and follows the accolade from 2016 when the city made it in to the top 20 in the European Digital City Index for starting and scaling a digital tech business.

The Tech Nation 2017 report looks at the key clusters of activity in the UK in a sector behind some of the most transformational new technologies, suggesting they contribute close to £100 billion a year to the nation’s economic output.

According to latest figures, Manchester has more than 62,650 digital jobs, with people working in the industry earning average salaries of £48,000 a year. Digital technology businesses are reckoned to contribute £2.8bn of value to the city economy, the report says.

The growth of digital technology companies in Manchester has been driven by the presence of large corporates such as LateRooms and Auto Trader. MediaCityUK, home to the BBC and ITV Granada, draws in great talent meanwhile, Manchester Science Partnerships’ Central Campus is home to more than 170 companies in the life science, healthtech, biotech, ICT, digital and creative sectors.

The report says local support networks, tech industry meet-ups and the availability of co-working space are critical factors in assisting the growth of tech companies and associated scale-up businesses.

Accelerate Places on Princess Street, is the latest co-working offices to enter Manchester and its tailored workspace for scale-up businesses is set to home to several growing tech industry businesses, among them DueCourse, Nuuk Digital and My Clever Agency.

Lisa Murgatroyd, Community Manager from Accelerate Places, welcomed the report: “The Tech Nation report provides a very clear illustration of the strategic importance of the tech industry to the Manchester economy.

“We know from our own experience that Manchester is a place which works not just for tech businesses but growing scale-up companies generally and we can see that in the numbers of people who have approached us here at Accelerate Places.

“What’s important is that we work together to raise the city’s profile as a digital destination, and partner with the universities, Manchester City Council and other technology focused growth hubs to make sure we develop and maintain the talent necessary to fuel that growth.”
