Why corporate training and development shouldn't be an afterthought!

Despite living in a continually challenging fast paced world, training and development often appear low down on many businesses' list of priorities.

Why corporate training and development shouldn't be an afterthought!

"Neither a skills impaired workforce nor financial instability should restrict business owners from growing and developing within."
Michelle Mercer, Director - Total Excellence

When training is eventually arranged, it’s usually done from a fire-fighting standpoint – to address a pressing need or issue – and often in haste.

What many companies fail to realise is that there can be significant value in adopting pre-planned, structured training and development programmes, which can have significant personal benefit to the employee and the business as a whole

Every company is the sum total of what their individual employees consistently achieve

It’s no secret that good quality training increases staff productivity, improves motivation and maximises performance in the workplace. It allows employees to acquire new skills, sharpen existing ones, perform better and become better leaders.

Heading up the battle to bridge Greater Manchester’s ever-widening skills gap is Michelle Mercer, Director at North West based training provider Total Excellence Centre.

Michelle told us, “Regardless of a business’ size or industry, employers should be doing their absolute utmost to make sure that every employee reaches his or her full potential.”

“All too often, we come across companies whose primary barriers to progression are either a skills impaired workforce or financial instability. Neither of these issues should restrict business owners from growing and developing their employees.”

As an ILM Accredited Centre, Total Excellence Centre can offer an extensive range of both Accredited, Endorsed and non-Accredited Learning and Development programmes to organisations, throughout the UK. These “engaging, enabling and highly effective” programmes have already helped hundreds of SME’s achieve and often supersede their business growth objectives.

Funding for growing businesses in the North West makes a huge impact

With both ERDF and ESF support available for qualifying SME businesses in Greater Manchester, many people have benefitted from first class training, with absolutely no financial outlay from either themselves or their employer.

As well as offering ‘fully funded’ Executive Development programmes, Total Excellence Centre has access to a wider range of funding streams, meaning that companies who are genuinely serious about developing their people, teams and business can access funding for several training initiatives, including; Management & Leadership, People Development, Business & Sales Development, Presentation Skills and Customer Service.

This funding can often be a lifeline to companies who might not otherwise have the financial capacity to offer premium quality training to their staff.

Michelle was keen to add, “The importance of training shouldn’t be underestimated as it serves to increase productivity, team motivation and job satisfaction. Even the most experienced members of staff, may at times, need further development which can help them realise their full potential and bring about positive change within the teams they might manage and business they work for.

Overcoming challenges

One of the main challenges that SME’s face when it comes to offering training to their workforce, is the fear of the amount of time spent ‘away from the job’.

However, Michelle was quick to offer reassurance. “We completely understand the growing need within SME businesses to deliver cost effective learning solutions that won’t gnaw away at valuable time or have a detrimental impact on productivity levels.

“As such, our skilled trainers and coaches often deliver programmes at a Client’s premises, reducing the employees’ time away from the job, as well as eliminating expenses associated with travel and accommodation.

“Like every other function in a business, training and development should be focused on producing targeted and tangible results. The key to success is to treat training with the seriousness it deserves, by considering it an investment and keeping it entirely results-driven.

Remember, any business is only as good as its people, so if you want to attract and retain top talent, you have to invest the time and energy to develop your workforce.
