Young people call for business community to back their enterprising idea

"For these young people to dedicate their spare time to developing an enterprise project that could change peoples lives is amazing. We really hope the business community can get behind the team."

Entrepreneurial youngsters from across Wigan and Leigh are calling on businesses to help implement their idea that could help put an end to people sleeping out on the borough’s streets at night.

Project HomeZone has been set up by ten young people from Wigan Youth Zone, who are entering a national young enterprise competition to pitch their idea for turning disused transport containers into emergency accommodation for people at risk of homelessness or who are already homeless.

The team have designed mock ups for their accommodation and are in talks with various businesses, charities and associations across the borough to source a site and secure funding to test the solution.

The group has been supported by project lead Mike Lomax, from Wigan Youth Zone, and have had business support from Jackie Salt from ATTAIN Digital, Mike Sharkey from Greenmount Projects and Lisa McAllister from Lines Henry. Together they have guided the young people with their business expertise; such as sourcing green energy, sustainable drainage for the units, and putting together graphics of their ideas, and Gemma Unsworth has been leading on the operations management for the project.

Mike Sharkey, of Greenmount Projects, said: “For these young people to dedicate their spare time to developing an enterprise project that could change people’s lives is amazing.

“It has been great to be a part of the project and we really hope that the business community can get behind the team and make their idea a reality.”

The young people are appealing for local businesses to support the project, from helping to source available units that can be turned into accommodation to offering materials and furniture and household goods.

A Young Enterprise team member added: “As we’ve grown older, we have seen the issue of people sleeping on our streets increase – and we wanted to do something about it. We can’t believe the level of support we have received so far from local businesses and the council and hope that our idea can make a real difference and help end homelessness in Wigan.”
