Castle announces major education sector win

"We are highly delighted to have been appointed, by Bowmer Kirkland, to work on such an impressive building for UCLan. "
Lee Mitchel

Castle Building Services Organisation (CBS), one of the UK’s leading independent building services design and installation contractors, has announced a significant £6 million education sector contract win for its North West Office.

Working with main contractor, Bowmer + Kirkland, CBS has been appointed to provide a full range of mechanical, electrical and plumbing services on the University of Central Lancashire’s (UCLan) impressive £32 million new build Student Centre in Preston.

Designed by architect Hawkins\Brown, the 7,304 sqm four-storey, highly glazed building will provide a new reception area, informal learning spaces and a student wellbeing support centre.

It is also part of wider investment by the university as part of its £200m masterplan which is transforming its Preston Campus, including the creation of a new civic square which will form an iconic gateway to the City, spanning 8,440 sqm and providing flexible and adaptable spaces for a wide range of community, public, business and student uses.

CBS is fully prepared for the challenges the glazed building will present, namely heating and cooling solutions to create a comfortable space for students to occupy both for recreation and educational purposes.

Based on its extensive experience of successfully delivering major education projects, coupled with its BIM capabilities, the contractor will adopt its tried and tested ‘build before we build’ ethos to ensure that intricate design and installation details are in place well ahead of  its arrival on site in May 2020.

Speaking about this latest win, Lee Mitchel, the contractor’s operations director for the North West said:

“We are highly delighted to have been appointed, by Bowmer + Kirkland, to work on such an impressive building for UCLan.  The building has been designed with flexibility in mind and as such, the building services adopted within it must reflect that.  I am confident that our early appointment to the project and longstanding working relationship with the main contractor will support the seamless delivery of the state-of-the-art building.

Speaking about the project, Michael Ahern, UCLan’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “Everyone involved in delivering this milestone project within our wider Masterplan is looking forward to seeing our new Student Centre and square taking shape over the coming months. Not only is it going to transform an area of Preston, it will provide outstanding new facilities for our staff and students in addition to a fantastic, civic space for the people who live, work in and visit the City.
