A recipe for success helping to raise funds for Maggie's Centres

"I wanted to contribute to the cookbook, help raise funds to support and to raise awareness of the work Maggies Centres do across the UK...''"
Lisa Smith

A year ago, Lisa Smith, owner of Cumbrian cake company Ginger Bakers, became involved with a collaborative recipe book called Recipes to Remember, a cookbook designed to raise funds for Maggie’s Centres across the UK.

The book was published in October 2018, and a year on, the book has raised over £15,000 so far…

The cookbook containing 60 mouth-watering recipes and the array of personal stories that sit alongside them has proved to be a huge success, and it’s no surprise with contributions sat alongside Lisa’s from the likes of Raymond Blanc, Victoria Derbyshire and Tom Kerridge.

Lisa initially became involved after being approached by the charity to provide a personal recipe for inclusion in the book in light of Lisa’s own life journey.

They wanted a recipe that told her story so, after a little deliberation Lisa decided to provide a very personal recipe…

The first bake Lisa ever made at Ginger Bakers was based on a creation her grandmother used to pack her off to university with, called Ella’s treat… when Lisa had her own daughter Nancy, she decided to adapt and update the recipe and call it Chocolate Nancy…

Now reworked with several added ingredients and renamed, Lisa set out to tell the story of the origins of the delicious oat, fruit and nut bake and the important roles that both Ella and Nancy have played in Lisa’s life story so far… and most importantly to help support Maggie’s Centres.

A year on the book has raised a significant amount of money, but not content with contributing a recipe Lisa has actively promoted the book and her involvement to help this amazing charity at every possible turn. As well as donating all of the profits from the sale of any recipe books Ginger Bakers will also be donating the profits from the sales of Chocolate Nancy from now until the end of the festive period to Maggie’s Centres.

Lisa said: “A cancer journey is so much more than just hospital visits and treatment. The impact on self-esteem, finances, relationships, travel, juggling family life and personal life, and enjoyment of food and taste all need to be supported too. Which is why I wanted to contribute to the cookbook, help raise funds to support and to raise awareness of the work Maggie’s Centres do across the UK, offering cancer sufferers and their families a beautiful place to find some peace and understanding.”

Maggie’s provides free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their family and friends, following the ideas about cancer care originally laid out by Maggie Keswick Jencks. Built in the grounds of NHS cancer hospitals, Maggie’s Centres are places with professional staff on hand to offer the support people need.

Maggie’s Centres are places where people can find practical advice about benefits and eating well; places where qualified experts provide emotional support; places to meet other people; places where you can simply sit quietly with a cup of tea.

Recipes To Remember can be ordered from https://maggiescookbook.com or from Ginger Bakers. The paperback is priced at £15 and the hardback is priced at £20.
