Halewood Investment Boosts City of London Distillery

Halewood Wines and Spirits has made a strategic investment in The City of London Distillery, enabling the micro-distillery to further capitalise on the gin renaissance by gaining new routes to market.

Halewood Investment Boosts City of London Distillery

"Halewood's investment gives us the opportunity to expand our reach throughout the rest of the UK and internationally."
Jonathan Clark

Master Distiller and Managing Director, Jonathan Clark, remains at the Bride Lane-based distillery, the only working distillery in the City of London, to focus on expanding the reach of his multi-award winning craft gin portfolio. Further to the additional routes to market that the deal offers, the distillery will also benefit from support in marketing and promoting the brands.

The City of London Distillery produces City of London Dry, Old Tom and Sloe Gins, Christopher Wren Gin and Square Mile Gin, which was developed to celebrate the distillery’s location in the heart of the City. These spirits complement Halewood’s existing portfolio of handcrafted premium gin brands, including Whitley Neill Gin, Liverpool Gin and the newly launched Marylebone Gin, which form part of the company’s wider premium craft spirits range.

Jonathan Clark, The City of London Distillery, says: “Being the only gin distillery in the Square Mile has given us a loyal customer-base since we opened in 2012. The Halewood investment now gives us the opportunity, not only to continue experimenting and perfecting our existing gin portfolio here in the City, but also to expand our reach throughout the rest of the UK and internationally.”

Stewart Hainsworth, Group CEO, Halewood Wines & Spirits says: “Jonathan is an incredibly high calibre distiller with a distinctive offering in a busy market. With our focus on craft, Jonathan’s unique proposition and passion for traditional high grade distilling caught our eye and we’re looking forward to supporting him in expanding his premium portfolio.”

In addition to its City-focused gin portfolio, which won gold and double gold awards at the 2016 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, the City of London Distillery also offers interactive visitor experiences including distillery tours, gin tastings and a Gin Lab Experience where visitors can design their own bottle of gin. Another attraction is the much-in-demand speakeasy-style COLD bar, serving premium cocktails with table service and a view of the striking copper stills set behind floor to ceiling glass.

The City of London Distillery will continue to operate independently. This is another strategic move for the Halewood business in supporting craft producers and follows other recent distillery investments including: West Cork Distillers, producers of The Pogues Irish Whiskey; Liverpool Gin, which involved significant investment in a new state-of-the-art distillery at Halewood’s site in Merseyside and the imminent build of a new organic whisky distillery in North Wales. Halewood has also recently ventured into craft beer with its acquisition of Cumbria’s Hawkshead Brewery, which also continues to operate independently.
