ONE of the region’s leading fertility experts is celebrating after being given professorships with two major universities - one at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Consultant gynaecologist Luciano Nardo is director of acclaimed Cheshire fertility clinic Reproductive Health Group, based in Daresbury, near Warrington.

He’s respected for his knowledge of complex surgery, identifying underlying issues for patients with fertility problems and in conducting his own clinical research.

And he’s now been rewarded for his efforts with two prestigious teaching roles - one here in the UK and the other in his native Italy.

He’s now ‘Visiting Professor’ to MMU, taking up a role in the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

Meanwhile he’s also been handed a professorship within the University of Catania in Sicily, Italy, owing to his long term commitment to research and teaching.

Dr Michael Carroll, Senior Lecturer in Reproductive Science at MMU and Course Director of the MSc Clinical Science/Cellular Science, said: “Dr Luciano Nardo was appointed as a visiting Prof as a leading expert in gynaecology, female reproductive health and infertility.

“He and his colleagues at the Reproductive Health Group deliver teaching to trainee clinical embryologists and andrologists taking the MSc in Clinical Science at Manchester Metropolitan and will develop research avenues investigating male and female infertility issues.”

Professor Nardo says his new connection with MMU will enable students to benefit from study placements within Reproductive Health Group clinics, opening new doors in their pursuit of knowledge.

He added: “It’s a great honour to been given professorships both here in Manchester and in Catania, and I hope it reflects my commitment to reproductive medicine both here in the UK and in my native Sicily.

“And I also hope my collaboration with new academic partners will result in fresh and exciting research projects, allowing students to enjoy placements within RHG and keeping Greater Manchester at the forefront of innovation.”

Professor Nardo’s Reproductive Health Group clinic opened in July 2014 and represented the UK’s first fully integrated fertility hospital, offering fertility techniques, including genetic testing, while also boasting a fully-equipped operating facility for day-case surgical procedures.

Meanwhile Reproductive Health Group also operates clinics at the BMI Alexandra Hospital, Cheadle, and the newly-opened Spire Manchester Hospital in West Didsbury.

Having trained in Italy, London and Manchester, Professor Nardo was appointed as Consultant in Gynaecology and Reproductive Medicine at St Mary’s Hospital, Manchester, where he worked until 2011.
