New book by Dr Diane Speier bridges a glaring literary gap in postnatal support

"Life After Birth may be currently classified as the most authoritative document about the fourth trimester."
Michel Odent

International speaker and writer Dr Diane Speier has published Life After Birth in response to a gaping hole in the market, when it comes to informing parents about the transformational impact of the postnatal period - the three months after giving birth to a new baby, sometimes referred to as ‘the fourth trimester.’

New parents can currently choose between a mind boggling array of guides to pregnancy, birth and parenting, and yet Diane, who is a practicing psychotherapist, hypnotherapist and a grandmother with a PhD in Women’s Studies, was increasingly frustrated by a lack of comprehensive information available to parents on the ‘fourth trimester’ which is so often overlooked, yet a critical time for parents.

The full title of the book Life After Birth: A Parent’s Holistic Guide for Thriving in the Fourth Trimester takes the reader on a detailed journey, incorporating all aspects of the postnatal experience, from navigating physical body changes, demystifying hormonal fluctuations and feeding choices to bonding, attachment and relationship dynamics. She also introduces energy medicine techniques within the book, which makes it the first of its kind within the context of the postnatal period.

Having run postnatal classes, groups and workshops in her native New York for many years before emigrating to the UK, Diane has a profound understanding of the myriad of challenges faced by new parents, backed up by a sound academic track record in perinatal care. She also sits on the All Party Parliamentary Group for Conception to Age 2: The First 1001 Days, focusing on the importance of addressing the needs of families at this time.

The book is already receiving rave reviews and features on bestseller listings as it is a much anticipated guide to a period in time that so often goes under the radar, yet in which parents can feel overwhelmed and even experience perinatal mental illness.

Commenting on the launch of her book, Dr Diane Speier said: “When my daughter gave birth to my first grandson in 2011, and asked where all the books were on the postpartum period, I realised that there were very few in existence and it was time to do something about it.

“Although there is some investment going into perinatal mental health, postnatal care has been subject to funding cuts, stripping vital services both in statutory care and in the community. My aim was really to take a practical and holistic approach to addressing new parents’ physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual needs.”

French obstetrician, Michel Odent, who has been a leader in the natural birth movement for 40 years, added: “I have known Diane in the 1980s as a popular childbirth educator. As a conference organiser, she knows how to attract lay people and medical people as well, and how to communicate with them. She is familiar with the concept of energy medicine, she is a doula and she has been working with British health visitors.

“Life After Birth may be currently classified as the most authoritative document (“the bible”) about the fourth trimester.”
