Training shapes up for Kendal pupils

Training shapes up for Kendal pupils

""

A Kendal school has championed an innovative new scheme aimed at developing the educational and employability skills of young people in the region.

The Queen Katherine School (QKS) is coming to the end of its first year running the Shaping Young Futures (SYF) programme, which supports children for the future through specialist methods of learning.

The SYF scheme is aimed at increasing the English, maths and IT skills of pupils aged eight to 16, as well as improving soft skills such as communication and confidence.

The programme has been running since September at QKS, where it has been welcomed by teachers, parents and pupils alike.

Jane Brierley, assistant head teacher at the school said: “We are always looking for additional opportunities to support individuals in creative ways. Some students require a different approach and a chance to learn in a more practical setting. Shaping Young Futures engages with the pupils, who are keen to attend and arrive with a positive mind-set.

“Parents are pleased that the school is offering something a bit different to support the students and the students’ reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. Immediately after the first group finished the programme there was a queue outside my door of other students asking if they could join!”

Jane puts the success of the SYF programme down to the fact pupils are taught things in a ‘real world’ way, which teachers would find difficult to deliver in a classroom setting. She says the students enjoy working in small groups and are making excellent progress.

Jane added: “Some students had real ‘eureka’ moments where they finally understood fractions or percentages for the first time and this increase in confidence has enabled them to access more of the curriculum on their return to school.

“Their knowledge has increased in key areas, and with the increased confidence and motivation this brings they will be well on their way to achieving their qualifications.”

Now, the Shaping Young Futures initiative is going to be made available to other schools in the region.

Shirley Williams, operations manager for Shaping Young Futures said: “We work closely with schools, parents and the pupils themselves to provide a training programme which combines school work with inspiring training. It helps pupils grow, develop and prepare for success both while still in education, and once they enter the world of work or college.

“There’s a lot of pressure on the younger generation and the current levels of youth unemployment are widely reported in the media. That’s why Shaping Young Futures is committed to unlocking potential and adding the right skills which will set pupils on course to a future of opportunity.”

Schools, parents and students can request a free Shaping Young Futures information pack or arrange an appointment by calling 0800 012 4135 or emailing info@shapingyoungfutures.co.uk
