Oldham residents young and old are walking for a world without dementia.

October's Oldham Memory Walk will highlight the benefits of gentle exercise whilst raising money for Alzheimer's Society.

According to Public Health England, physical activity, including walking, not only helps to reduce the risk of developing dementia but boosts emotional wellbeing and promotes companionship.

The sponsored morning walk will take place in Alexandra Park, is suitable for people of all abilities and is open to everyone. Different routes cater for a range of fitness levels, with the shortest trail covering just 600 steps (around 500 yards). Walkers can join a fast or relaxed group or choose to walk only with other women.

The event has been organised by adult health and social care charity Making Space, Age UK Oldham and Oldham Community Leisure.

Amanda Barrell, team leader for Making Space said: "There is good evidence that being outside is essential for our physical and mental wellbeing, especially as we get older.

"Walking can help to prevent falls, promote independence, promote brain function, reduce social isolation, reduce risk of heart disease and support the maintenance of long term conditions such as diabetes and dementia.

"The Oldham Memory Walk will raise awareness of the physical and mental health benefits of walking and hopefully many participants will go on to join a regular walking group."

Anyone wanting to take part can meet at on Thursday 27 October at 10.30am at the Boathouse Cafe, Alexandra Park.
