North West firms must think outside the box to avoid Brexit talent drain

North West firms struggling to keep hold of EU employees amidst ongoing Brexit chaos should seek expert help and think ‘outside the box’ when it comes to incentivising valued members of staff to stay, according to Shoosmiths Manchester’s latest hire – partner and business immigration expert, Emma Morgan.

Emma has an established reputation across a broad spectrum of complex employment issues and has supported employers on all aspects of business immigration including proactively preparing for Brexit and dealing with Home Office intervention.

With Brexit uncertainty continuing in the wake of government requests for extensions to the Article 50 process, Emma will help to ensure the Shoosmiths Manchester team can respond to increased demand for employment law expertise and business immigration advice from clients in the region.

Emma has considerable experience of advising employers on the implications of Brexit, both in terms of retaining their existing European workforce and on their ability to recruit EU nationals.  This has involved advising on the “roll out” of the new settled status scheme and talking to employers about how they can incentivise their European employees to commit to stay in the UK working with their employer and formalise their residency.

Emma said, “EU nationals comprise a vital part of the workforce for many North West businesses and companies of all sizes are seeking help with trying to retain and recruit European talent at present. Across the UK we’re seeing EU employees opting to return to their homes nations or find jobs in other European countries and this is reflected in the North West. With skills shortages already a challenge, it’s essential that these firms can access the advice they need to help prevent the loss of existing skilled workers and ensure they can still be attractive to the EU candidate market. I’ll be working with Shoosmiths clients to help them think outside the box when it comes to managing business immigration as the UK looks to withdraw from the EU.”

Emma joins the Shoosmiths’ employment team from DAC Beachcroft LLP. The Shoosmiths Manchester employment team has also been bolstered by the appointment of Associate, Amy Anderson who was previously with Brabners LLP. Her employment experience includes dealing with complex Tribunal claims, advising on a variety of day-to-day HR matters including disciplinary and grievances and drafting of contractual and policy documentation.

Talking about the team expansion, Wayne Nash, head of office for Shoosmiths Manchester said, “Shoosmiths has carved out a reputation as a leading provider of expert employment law advice in the North West and the appointment of Emma and Amy will ensure we can build upon that success. By expanding our team with these highly-experienced professionals we will be able to offer our clients the advice and support they need in a challenging and ever-changing employment law landscape.”

As part of Shoosmiths’ national employment practice, the Manchester employment team provides commercial, pragmatic advice to a variety of sectors on the full range of employment law issues.

"Its essential that these firms can access the advice they need to help prevent the loss of existing skilled workers and ensure they can still be attractive to the EU candidate market. "
