Women in the Law UK to hold first full-day conference in Manchester on 15 November

"This is going to be a great day in terms of education and inspiration, but also for making new connections between the UKs many different thriving legal communities."
Sally Penni

Women in the Law UK will hold its inaugural annual conference in Manchester city centre next month. The all-day event, which will cover topics ranging from CV writing to setting up a legal consultancy or becoming a judge, is scheduled to take place from 10.00am on Friday 15 November 2019 at the Manchester offices of legal services giant DLA Piper.

The conference, which is expected to attract hundreds of delegates, will play host to a range of eminent speakers from the worlds of law, business, academia and sport. Confirmed speakers include the prominent crossbench peer and former Paralympian, Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson, and His Honour Judge David Stockdale QC, Honorary Recorder of Manchester.

The conference will be hosted by DLA Piper, with headline sponsorship from wealth management firm Quilter Cheviot and the support of a range of other sponsors. The programme is intended to help female legal professionals advance, and thrive, in their careers and will cover issues including financial planning, mental health and wellbeing.

Sessions on the agenda include:

  • Career progression: how to become a partner, QC, judge or academic.
  • How to set up your own legal consultancy.
  • CV refresher.
  • How to be indispensable in your career.
  • How to earn more.
  • Business development and the law.
  • How to use social media effectively.
  • How to have more confidence, clarity and connection.
  • Wellbeing and the law.

Lunch will be provided and the formal sessions will be followed by a networking drinks reception and an optional post-conference dinner.

Women in the Law UK is a national organisation headquartered in Manchester that exists to support and encourage gender diversity in the legal profession. It has more than 700 members and has over the past 12 months launched regular events programmes in London, Leeds, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Birmingham and Cardiff.

Earlier this year the not-for-profit organisation launched a Charter for law firms and chambers that can demonstrate their ongoing commitment to promoting gender diversity and wellbeing within the legal profession.

Women in the Law UK’s founder and chair, the award-winning barrister Sally Penni, said, “This is going to be a superb conference, packing a raft of our most popular topics into a single day. It will also be a great chance for members and guests to network and get to know each other better, and I would like to thank DLA Piper for hosting us and enabling it to happen.

“I am particularly looking forward to welcoming lawyers – women and men – from the various cities in which we have recently launched, and beyond. This is going to be a great day in terms of education and inspiration, but also for making new connections between the UK’s many different thriving legal communities.”

Tickets for the conference are priced at £29.00 for members and £69.00 for non-members, and should be booked at www.womeinthelaw.com/webevents. Places at the post-conference dinner cost £45.00 per head and should also be purchased via the Women in the Law UK website.

Accommodation for delegates travelling to the event is available at a number of nearby hotels including the nearby Midland Hotel, Novotel and Premier Inn. Delegates should book this direct.

Women in the Law UK’s events are held under the Chatham House Rule, enabling speakers and audience members to speak freely and learn from each-others’ experiences in a confidential environment. Previous events have covered subjects including career progression, why lawyers need to sit on boards, how to network and make it work for you, and what lawyers can learn from inspiring businesswomen.

To book places at Women in the Law UK events readers should visit www.womeninthelawuk.com  or book directly via www.eventbrite.co.uk. Individuals and businesses that are interested in joining Women in the Law UK or applying for the Charter should email womeninthelawuk@gmail.com.
