Turning The Tables for Independent Coffee Shops

Bedroom DJs urged to ditch their duvets - Amateur talent given showcase by the lake in Croston

Turning The Tables for Independent Coffee Shops

"By arranging a small gig it remains a hobby but also gives the audience an intimate experience."

A Lancashire cafe and cycling hub is hosting an event that will give a unique platform to aspiring DJ talent.

Twin Lakes Velo Cafe in Croston, a sleepy Chorley village, is supporting local talent by giving them a showcase at their lakeside venue. They have teamed up with a fledgling ‘Bedroom DJs’ group to give amateur music mixers the opportunity to perform in public.

Steven Nicholson-Wrigley, who heads the Croston Bedroom DJs group is hoping to attract music mixing fans who are currently confined to their bedroom, garage or shed.  There is a trend in the UK of people who own turntables, mixers and other DJ equipment and who refer to themselves as ‘Bedroom DJ’s’. Steven explains:

‘I have a passion for music but don’t routinely play live to audiences.  Like other bedroom DJs I play for friends at home or pod cast on the internet.  By arranging a small gig it remains a hobby but also gives the audience an intimate experience.  I’m hoping to attract some more like-minded performers who want to share the music they love and craft their skills at future events.’

A Facebook group - Croston Bedroom DJs - has been set up and welcomes members from across the region who want to chat about music and share their work. At the first live event, the decks will be handed over to four DJs for up to thirty minutes each.

Twin Lakes Velo Cafe, an independent venue run by cycle-mad Jon Back and Damian Fearon, is opening their bar for the gig.  Steven adds: ‘The cafe's setting by the lake is perfect for the first Saturday Session.  Future plans include live streaming the events and pod casts.’

Jon Back from the venue says: ‘This event is a great platform to showcase local talent and something completely different for Chorley and Croston. We’re hoping to reveal some of the village’s best-kept music scene secrets and cement our position as a community resource.’

The Croston Bedroom DJ event takes place on Saturday 10th December from 7pm at Twin Lakes Velo Cafe, at PR26 9RF in Croston.

The cafe often opens regularly in the evenings, running a gourmet burger bistro with veggie options alongside comedy or live music. It has also forged a reputation as the alternative local venue and hosts many private parties and events beside the lakes.
