MP backs scheme for young people in Cumbria

MP backs scheme for young people in Cumbria

""

A pioneering new scheme to develop the educational and employability skills of young people in Cumbria has been backed by Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron.

The Liberal Democrat president has pledged his support to Shaping Young Futures (SYF), a programme which uses specialist learning methods to help young people gain qualifications, grow confidence and develop soft skills.

Tim also made a guest appearance at SYF’s awards night to present awards to learners who achieved qualifications in level 2 maths and English.

The students, from Queen Katherine School, obtained a 100 per cent pass rate in maths and an 86 per cent pass rate in English.

Tim Farron said: “It was an honour to give awards to young people who had really met their potential by succeeding in their courses.

“It was a proud moment for the young people, their friends and their families to see their hard work rewarded and I hope it will boost their confidence as they take on their next challenges.”

Shirley Williams, operations manager for Shaping Young Futures, said:  “Many young people feel burdened by the pressure to do well at school, particularly those who may require a different approach to learning. Through inspirational training in a more practical setting, we believe all young people can accomplish their goals.

“It’s fantastic to have the support of Tim Farron and it was great to have him along at the awards evening to celebrate with the students. Our aim at SYF is to help young people to help themselves, and our learners should be incredibly proud of all they’ve achieved.”

The SYF scheme is aimed at increasing the English, maths and IT skills of pupils aged eight to 16, as well as developing soft skills such as communication and critical thinking.

Shaping Young Futures works closely with schools, parents and the pupils themselves to devise tailored training aligned with the National Curriculum and can assist with additional learning through the upcoming exam season.
