Funding announced for STEM internship programme across the Northwest

Alliance for Learning secures government funding to deliver STEM internships across the region

Funding announced for STEM internship programme across the Northwest

"This programme means we are now involved in half of the eight government initiatives to encourage people into the teaching profession through work-based training placements."
Eleanor Davidson

New government funding is going to give aspiring STEM* teachers paid internships and teacher training, thanks to Altrincham’s Alliance For Learning.

The funding will see the Alliance for Learning SCITT**  deliver four-week placements throughout schools within Trafford, Manchester and Warrington, so that they can observe and learn through teaching, running science projects, offering student support and helping with experiments and laboratory work.  They will have the opportunity to jointly plan and deliver lessons, whilst gaining support from one-to-one teacher mentors.

Additional benefits of the programme will include support with teacher training applications during the final year, a guaranteed interview upon application for the Alliance for Learning SCITT teacher training programme and support when preparing for professional skills tests.

Eleanor Davidson, Director of SCITT and Assistant Director of the Alliance for Learning, comments: "This programme means we are now involved in half of the eight government initiatives to encourage people into the teaching profession through work-based training placements.

“It will run for four weeks at the end of the Summer term and will be great way for aspiring teachers to prepare for their future in education.”

The training will be managed from Altrincham Grammar School for Girls where the Alliance for Learning SCITT is based. Last year, 97% of the SCITT’s trainees secured employment in one of its 61 partner schools.

Concludes Eleanor: “We are delighted to secure funding so that we can offer the internship programme and we look forward to accepting applications in March.”
