Innovative technology SME InTouch has recently appointed Tony Gates as a non-executive adviser to bring in his wealth of expertise in the construction and highways sector. InTouch is currently rolling out its SmartWater product to highways authorities across the UK and internationally, and Tony will be advising the team on the highways and gully management product's growth and development.
Tony has 30 years of experience in the construction and highways industry and a successful track record of growing businesses. He is a Chartered Civil Engineer, a Fellow of the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation and a past chairman of the Highways Term Maintenance Association.
Tony's role for InTouch as a non-executive adviser is a part-time role and he will be supporting the MD and his team with strategy, marketing, business planning and client engagement. This fits in with his day job as a member of the senior leadership team at family engineering business Sir Robert McAlpine.

SmartWater is an innovative managed-service solution for gully cleansing management and flood prevention, which uses IoT self-learning algorithms and specialist sensor technology.
Having undergone trials with several councils and highways authorities, the product is currently being rolled out across further areas in the UK and internationally. SmartWater can deliver year-on-year financial savings, improved health and safety and superior asset management.
Currently, gully cleansing by highways authorities is done on a manual rota check or after someone has reported a blockage or flooding. Coupled with increased flooding risk due to climate change, InTouch has brought this routine task into the 21st century, using a combination on IoT sensors and predictive software.
Research found that, when inspected, 80% of gullies are actually clean and running, meaning wasted time and unnecessary costs for local governments. By using SmartWater's managed service, the highways authority can be alerted when a gully requires cleansing, as well as benefiting from flood alerts.
